The LCpl Jacob R. Lugo Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Detachment’s name honors LCpl Jacob R. Lugo of Flower Mound, Texas. LCpl Lugo gave the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of a grateful nation, on August 24, 2004. He was serving on his second tour as a team leader with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, in the Anbar Province of Iraq when he was killed by an explosion.

The LCpl Jacob R. Lugo Detachment #1300 was chartered on March 18, 2008 in Denton, Texas, and is a nonprofit organization registered with the State of Texas and the federal government as a nonprofit veteran’s organization.

We are honored to offer scholarships to deserving students from Denton County who meet the eligibility requirements. The scholarship monies are allocated by the detachment based upon the proceeds from fund-raising activities.

Eligibility: For the 2015- 2016 school year, the Marine Corps League, LCpl Jacob R. Lugo Detachment will award “three” $1000 scholarships for students who fall under criteria 1 and 2.  We will also award “three” $1000 scholarships to students who fall under criteria 3.

1. Children, step children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of a Marine Corps
    League or Associate members of the LCpl Jacob R. Lugo Detachment, in good

2. Children, step children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of Marines who have
    lost their lives in the line of duty. These individuals must reside or be attending a
    school in Denton County.

3. Marines or FMF Corpsmen currently serving in any status in the Marine Corps and attending 
    school in Denton County or to Marine or FMF corpsmen veterans who are currently in school in the
    pursuit of an undergraduate degree. Must join the Marine Corps League, LCpl Jacob R. Lugo Detachment
    #1300 before submitting application.

The League hopes to reward students who have shown special "heart" and performed to the best of their ability. It is recognized that this high level of achievement may have been maintained under difficult conditions related to family, outside endeavors, employment and other situations. The scholarship committee will consider academic merit, service and need. Students may be recognized for performing exceptional service to their school and to the community. Applications are welcomed from students planning to go to a four-year college or university as well as those planning to attend a community college or vocational program. An applicant may be called upon to be interviewed as part of the selection process.

Awarded scholarships will be paid directly to college registrars.
